After all this hype on the "TSA Whistle-Blowing Witch" [ www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41959553?GT1=43001 ] How many people on here think coming out of the broom closet would be a good idea? How many think we should stay hidden? Why? My personal opinion on this matter is that, whether we get "negative" or "positive" publicity, we need to come together and show people as a whole that we are not bad people, so that misunderstanding and irrational fears like what happened in the TSA Whistle Blowing Witch scenario doesn't continue to happen. So many of us try to inform the general public that we are part of that we are not people to fear. I'm even going as far as making a power point, brochures, and dressing up on May 2nd for Pagan Coming Out Day (I'll be in college that day), just to help educate a small portion of the populous that I have to deal with while attending the college I do. What are everyone elses' thoughts on the matter? Pagan Coming Out Day - pagancomingoutday.com/

I've not heard of Pagan Coming Out Day. However, Beltane is still very much celebrated in the UK;even though many do not actually know what they are celebrating! Pagan ceremonies abound, and are often watched by a curious public! Much, but not entirely, celebrations on May 1st. do involve witchcraft. Children still dance around the Maypole without a clue as to why they do it! Christians, of course, do "steal" Beltane, with their little girl "May Queen". And the hymn (very nice hymn actually!) "Oh, Mary we crown thee with blossoms today; queen of the angels, and queen of the May". Ah, those Christians! They'll steal anything!.

lmao Brysing, At Old Dover Days here, they dance around the maypole, but at least 99% of them haven't a clue as to what they are doing, but the little kids have a blast. It's adorable.

Oh, I don't mind in the least everyone having a good day on May 1st, especially the kids, I do like to see them dance around the Maypole and see all the ribbons winding down. Of course they don't know why, but they enjoy it.

This is not surprising to me, ive been expecting something of the sort, and i also remember hearing something along these lines in african myth, saying when the servants of oshun (nature etc) regain their rightful place only then would the world be in balance.

I believe that some people like to keep their beliefs secret,at least to some extent. But all should be proud to say " I am a Pagan". I even wrote on my census form "Pagan-Witchcraft". I wear a pentagram pendant all the time. It frightens the life out of Jehovah's Witnesses!

I've found that, many people accept me as Pagan, so long as they can see the advantage for themselves. I'm a diviner, they still see that as a novel idea, reserved of course for only the most lower-class dinner parties But seriously, I am determined in my faith, and will not let blatant ignorance (As is all too present from some *Cough* CHRISTIAN *Cough* quarters) deter me. )O(

“Coming out of the broom closet” I have to say thats a bit of an interesting term lol I feel it’s going to be a problem no matter were you are or how you look at it, much like gay pride, it was something kept and shared behind closed doors for a long time. Even though the world has become more accepting I feel that as long as there are people in this world there will always be others that do not and will not accept change. But I also feel that you should not be afraid of how you are or what you believe in, people will always fear what they do not know or understand. The longest journey always start with a single step wether it be knowledge, forgiveness, or even acceptance. It’s not going to happen over night or even in the next year. So the question is were do we start?

I think it would be a good idea. although some wont like the thought of pagans around others may understand and get the will to learn more about magik. I have came out of the broom closet and it altered peoples views in a good way. people who bothered me don't bother me anymore. it also gives you the chance to share the love we possess.

I have experienced various forms of religion from Latter Day Saints to Islam. As a former Muslimah, it was difficult to practice Islam. My husband and I compromised on Catholicism, so (smile), this Christian keeps half of her body in the closet and the other half out. For example, I make oils for my husband's ailments with magickal intent. My kids and I made a wishbox for upcoming Litha, and we sat out a tornado by reading Tarot cards. My husband does not mind my dealing in the occult, regardless the faction, as long as I maintain appearance. Many may think that I am a sell out, but I have undergone persecution in Islam and Magick by family members. I believe each person should do what is best for them individually. I live in SmallTown, BibleBelt. Even though my husband knows the family benefits from what I do, coming out of the closet is absolutely not a good idea for me. My husband and kids know they have a Catholic Witch Mama. ;D I don't think it is anyone else's business. For those who can and will come out of the closet, I support that 100%. Just as we are like minded and tolerate one another's factions such as Voudou or Wicca, I think we should understand how some are able to "dance in the rain" more so than others. Dream big.
