30 Seconds To Mars are a progressive/alternative rock band from Los Angeles formed in 1998 by Jared and Shannon Leto who are brothers, the dynamics of the band was originally a four piece band consisting of Jared Leto (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Shannon Leto(drums, percussion),Matt Wachter (Bassist) there was also another two ex members, Solon Bixler (guitarist) and Kevin Drake,Tomo Miličević (lead guitar, keyboards), replaced Bixler in 2003 and Matt Wachter (Bassist) is now currently playing with Angels and Airwaves.
The band is now a three piece band consisting of Jared(middle),Shannon(right side) and Tomo(left side).
Their sound has progressively changed from their first album to their latest album and throughout the bands history they have Incorporated a lot of symbolism into the band ranging from the Mars Glyphs, The Phoenix(Mithra Seal)Three Skulls(Trinity Seal), A black X overlaid on a circle(Echelon seal), an arrow(based on the Norse runic symbol for the god Tyr), and the latest symbol which the band refer to as "The Triad" and refers to group of three(which can also be referred to as the alchemy symbol for air).
Their lyrics are intense and dynamic and explore a lot of emotions, struggles and the war we can sometimes have with ourselves through our lives, They also launched an environmental campaign to coincide with the release of the song "A Beautiful Lie" from the album of the same title which was filmed on location in Greenland.
which resulted in the creation of www.abeautifullie.org/ Jared has also helped build for Habit for Humanity www.habitat.org/eurasia/ which in turn lead to the Echelon(Name for fans of the band) creating The Echelon House echelonhouse.weebly.com/
Jared and Shannon also spent some time in their childhood growing up in Haiti and due to the earthquake that hit, Jared returned to help out and raise money for the rebuilding of Haiti through his photo book(which has links for it in the Socialising Moot thread)
In their latest album the opening song is called Escape which starts with chants from Tibetan Monks and the last song on the album is called L490(also known as Equinox in certain countries due to L490 being a drug) starts with a Tibetan Singing Bowl and ends with chants from the Tibetan Monks L490 is completely composed by Shannon Leto and contains no vocals.
I have been to see them live 3 times and each time the venues have gotten a little bigger but they always have energetic and uplifting shows and I have seen ages from around ten right up to people in their late fifties early sixties at each one I've attended.
To me this band is not just a band they are ambassadors and humanitarians for earth you will either love or hate their music as I don't think there can be an in between with them.
Below is the art work for their albums and they have three studio albums to date.
2002 "30 Seconds To Mars, 30 Seconds to Mars"
2005 "30 Seconds To Mars, A Beautiful Lie"
2009 "30 Seconds to Mars, This Is War"
