The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall is an in depth historical opinion of one occultist regarding the creation and development of the major and minor religions of the word. Originally published in a large coffee volume complete with detailed pictures filled with symbology and esoteric teachings, later offerings are in paper back with and without the pictures.
I prefer the edition with the pictures as those pictures do have lots of esoteric teachings to offer. Hall has been criticized by some "modern esoteric" for the lack of his "scientific" study of history. However, if you take the book as the opinion of one esoteric teacher, it is a source of endless surprising revelations for a student to follow up with exploration of their own.
Additionally, I haven't found an older generation of serious practitioner yet that hasn't encourage exposure to Hall's work.
